Eleanor Parker in Detective Story

In 1951, Eleanor Parker appeared in the film Detective Story in a role for which she received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. In the movie, Eleanor Parker plays Mary the devoted wife of overly-dedicated police detective Jim McLeod (played by Kirk Douglas). Mary has a secret from her past which connects with a current case that Jim is investigating and this eventually leads to some marital issues. Being a faithfully filmed version of a stage play, all the action in Detective Story unfolds in and around the police station and so we never see Mary outside of her husband's world. What we do see are several heavily emotional scenes at the office...and Kirk Douglas and Eleanor Parker make for a great pairing and pull the whole thing off marvelously.
