Promoting The Seventh Sin

Like any other Hollywood classic, Eleanor Parker's 1957 film The Seventh Sin got it's fair share of publicity.

First, you have the build-up. A year and a half before The Seventh Sin was released theatrically came the announcement that Eleanor Parker would star in the film. Ava Gardner was originally attached to the picture.

Second, you have a nice poster advertising the film. Taglines like "The world forgives many things but not...The Seventh Sin" and "MGM's drama of modern morals in reckless Hong Kong" are there to pique interest. An adult entertainment label is also clearly visible which lets one know right away that the film is risqué‎.

I don't think that The Seventh Sin was as big a financial hit as MGM may have wanted. Solution? Play it on TV! Here is an ad for a television rebroadcast of the film from a decade after it was released:

Three Secrets promotional photographs

In 1950, Eleanor Parker starred in the movie Three Secrets alongside two other actresses in the Warner Bros stable, Patricia Neal and Ruth Roman. The film, a heavy soaper concerning three women who each gave up a baby boy for adoption, may just have been excuse to exercise the talents of three wonderful actresses but is nonetheless an enjoyable melodrama. The following is a collection of promotional images for Three Secrets, with an emphasis on Eleanor Parker and her various co-stars.

Eleanor Parker in Madison Avenue

In early 1962, the film Madison Avenue, based on a book published a decade before called "The Build-Up Boys," was released theatrically. The movie had been made in 1960 and apparently star Dana Andrews had been trying to get it made for several years previously. The press had also reported that several actresses had passed on the two female roles in Madison Avenue before Eleanor Parker and Jeanne Crain finally signed on. I guess the hook turned out to be three fairly big stars from the 1940s starring in a early 1960s film (done in a very 1950s style!).

Eleanor Parker plays Anne Tremaine in Madison Avenue, a woman who had inherited her father's failing advertising agency. Along comes Clint Lorimer (Dana Andrews), a master in the field of hype or "build-up," who proceeds to turn the business around. Soon after he also succeeds in turning the once innocent and frumpy Anne Tremaine into a cold and cynical business woman. Eleanor Parker plays her role well and with great ease, looking wonderful all the while.

Like so many other classic movie stars, Eleanor Parker got her picture in LIFE magazine a few times. Here are some examples:
